.:: FAQ on 'Wings of Humanity' ::.

What is this 'Wings of Humanity' about?
'Wings of Humanity' is a humanitarian initiative to solicit financial aid from relatives and friends  to provide relief for the recent flooding disaster in Pakistan.

Why this initiative?
There is not much public appeal to aid relief efforts for survivors of Pakistan Floods, even though the effects of the flooding is much more serious than the aftermath of the Asian tsunami occurance in 2004...

"This disaster is worse than the tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the Haiti earthquake," Maurizio Giuliano, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told AFP. Channelnewsasia

"The eyes see. The ears hear. Yet, somehow, the mind struggles to grasp the full dimension of this catastrophe. Almost 20 million people need shelter, food and emergency care. That is more than the entire population hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake, Cyclone Nargis, and the earthquake in Haiti - combined. At least 160,000 square kilometres of land is under water - an area larger than more than half the countries of the world.
Make no mistake: this is a global disaster, a global challenge. It is one of the greatest tests of global solidarity in our times. I therefore want to thank you for all that you have already done. Thanks to your help, we are feeding people, providing clean water, medicine and shelter."  Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in General Assembly on 19 August 2010

We can never feel the helplessness of the Pakistanis because most of us are fortunate enough not to go through that much of flooding. Therefore, through my humble effort in creating this awareness among Singaporeans, I hope I would be able to encourage all to donate generously to these surviving Pakistani.

Why 'Wings of Humanity'?
The name derives from the 'angel' pendant I made for my cousins and friends 2 years ago. It represented how each of them is just like 'an guardian angel' to me, who has helped me in one way or another. Hence, I would like to use this idea to send this message..

Each of us can be a 'guardian angel' to others by contributing whatever we can. We never know how much our little contribution could affect the lives of others.

How is this carry out?
There are 2 ways of carrying this out:
Direct donation to international bodies, such as Singapore Red Cross or Mercy Relief.
  • To support my initiative by adopting a crystal figurine for a minimum of S$10 or £5. Any other amount is welcome too!

The actual view of the figurine
Adopting a crystal figurine?
This idea came about when I browsed online sites during my online shopping. I thought that if sellers are able to sell their items online and there are people who purchase them, why can't I be a seller too? But the sole intention is to raise funds for those in need. Hence, the idea of adopting the crystal figurine, which I have a talent in making. =D

The cost
Adopt the crystal figurine for a minimum of S$10 or £5. The adoption of the crystal figurine includes the cost price of the materials needed to make the figurine (S$3) and the remaining S$7 will be donated. Postage will be paid by the addressee.

Tansparency of account details
I understand that there are many who are hesitant to donate through an individual because there are increasing cases where people collect money for their personal usage in the name of charity and fundraising. Therefore, to put everyone at ease with clear and accurate information, I will be putting up all the account details in my blog.

Where will the funds be donated to?
Funds collected will be channeled to either Singapore Red Cross , Mercy Relief or to a reliable Pakistani friend of mine.

Funds channeled to Singapore Red Cross will be done through online banking on 3rd September 2010. Funds to Mercy Relief will be delivered by me to the office on 5th September 2010. Any donations after that till end September will be passed to a friend of mine, who is a Pakistani local. Items purchase will depend on the amount collected and will be updated at a later date.

How to do fund transfer?
Kindly fill up the 'Adopt-a-figurine' form and I will get back to you asap with the necessary bank transfer details.

Lastly...
Just as what Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (August, 2010) mentions,

When faced with the tsunami, the earthquake in Haiti, and other natural disasters, we showed extraordinary humanity. Let us do so again today. Together, let us stand with the people of Pakistan. Let us act so that this natural disaster does not become a man-made catastrophe. Let us give this our all.

I hope everyone of us will contribute our individual bit to ease the hardship of our fellow human beings.

Sincerely yours,
Chay Hui Ying
